“Coaching was suggested by my Chief Executive to help me following a promotion. I was making the transition from ‘expert manager’ managing a specialist team to ‘general manager’ leading five separate teams.
It is fair to say that I was a little sceptical about coaching, whether I needed it and how credible it was. I have a reasonable degree of self awareness and wasn’t sure I needed to spend a couple of hours every other week going on about problems when I could have been getting on with the job. John was very good at explaining clearly what coaching is and is not. He picked up well on my concerns and tailored our sessions, clearly explaining the the tools that we were using and providing me with additional resources so that I could reflect on the theory behind our discussions.
Once we got going, John was fantastic at getting me to recognise self limiting beliefs that impact on my confidence and weaken my resolution to act. He has helped me to articulate my personal goals and values and then to align these to the ways in which I move forward in my new role. I feel empowered by this process, able to act more decisively – and to manage relationships in a more constructive way.
Where before I felt overwhelmed by the scope of my new role and could have struggled to make an impact I now have more confidence in my own ability to deliver and try to stick to my ‘authentic style’.
I greatly appreciate John’s sense of humour, there have been a lot of laughs in our sessions and some running jokes that keep us ticking along.
